◆ FIELD NOTES

My Upwork Journey: From $0 to Top Rated Plus as a WordPress Freelancer

Upwork went from side hustle to primary income in 8 months. Here’s the unfiltered breakdown — what worked, what flopped, and the exact profile changes that pushed me to Top Rated Plus.

Month 1–2: Zero Traction

First proposals got no replies. My profile was generic — “WordPress developer with 5 years experience.” Every other freelancer said the same. Fixed it by niching down hard: WooCommerce customization + Elementor Pro builds for international clients.

The Profile Rewrite

Rewrote the headline to lead with outcomes: “I build WooCommerce stores that convert — custom shortcodes, AJAX cart, RTL support.” Added specific numbers to every bullet. Replaced stock portfolio screenshots with annotated before/after comparisons.

Proposal Strategy

Stopped using templates. Every proposal opened with one specific observation about the client’s job post — something they mentioned that most bidders would ignore. Kept proposals under 150 words. Included a micro-audit or quick fix offer to show competence immediately.

Rate Progression

Started at $15/hr. Raised to $25 after first 3 five-star reviews. Now at $55/hr. Each raise came after 5 consecutive positive reviews — never raise mid-project.

Top Rated Plus Unlock

Hit Top Rated at $10k earnings. Top Rated Plus required $20k+ and 90%+ Job Success Score. JSS is driven by private feedback — always ask clients if they’re happy before they close the contract.

Current Stack

70% long-term retainer clients, 30% one-off projects. Retainers are the real income stabilizer — prioritize converting project clients into monthly support contracts.
